Life can be a bit raggedy at times - but that's okay, right?

Mel’s Favorite Quotes from Wicked – Part 1

Between the colorful and sparkly sets, music for the history books, and unforgettable performances, it’s no wonder *Wicked* has become one of the most talked-about movie musicals of the decade — and I couldn’t be more excited! The film brings Gregory Maguire’s imaginative world to life in breathtaking color, with Cynthia Erivo’s powerful portrayal of Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s crazy-awesome Glinda leading the charge. Whether you’ve already seen it in theaters or are waiting for the second part to drop, one thing’s for sure: *Wicked* isn’t just a feast for the eyes and ears—it’s full of wisdom, humor, and heart.

Wicked - The MovieFrom the very first scene, *Wicked* sets the tone with one of its most iconic lines: **“Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?”** This question, posed by Glinda the Good Witch, captures the central theme of the story—how perception shapes destiny. Elphaba’s so-called wickedness is never simple; I think it’s a product of misunderstanding, general “visual” prejudice, and her courage to challenge what’s tolerated. The movie invites viewers to reconsider who the real villains and heroes are, reminding us that reality often depends on where you’re standing. If you know me, I always say, “Babies are born PURE, and parents and society ruin them.” Usually said when someone is acting wickedly (hear the wicked witch of the west’s green cackle), and usually by a kid—ha! OK…so it’s probably a kid’s SCREAM.

As Elphaba’s journey unfolds, we see her struggle to reconcile her sense of justice with a world that fears difference. Her defiance, compassion, and longing for acceptance make her one of the most relatable “villains” ever written. Through her emerald eyes, we learn that standing up for what’s right can come at a steep cost—but it’s worth it. Elphaba’s strength reaches a crescendo in her self-affirming line: “My future is unlimited.” It’s more than just a lyric—it’s a declaration of hope. Isn’t it? In that moment, she becomes a symbol of resilience for anyone who’s ever felt misunderstood or underestimated. Which is most of us — right?

But *Wicked* isn’t all drama and defiance. The film’s quirkiness shines just as brightly, especially through its charismatic supporting cast. Take Fiyero, for instance, who delivers one of the movie’s most delightfully self-aware quips: **“I happen to be genuinely self-absorbed and deeply shallow.”** His carefree attitude and charm bring levity to a story filled with emotional intensity. Fiyero’s lines remind audiences that even in a world of magic and moral dilemmas, a little humor can go a long way in keeping things grounded.  Part 2 will shine light on Elphaba, and those unfamiliar with the story will get to know her better.

Who doesn’t have “complicated relationships” when it comes to friends? What begins as an opposite-sided rivalry (much like my Aggies and Longhorns) that transforms into a friendship built on mutual respect, empathy, and love in its purest form: friendship. Glinda’s sparkling and chaotic optimism and Elphaba’s fierce independence and ability to trudge forward create an unforgettable dynamic that mirrors how opposites often balance one another. As Glinda says in one of the most heartfelt moments of the film,

“Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”

It’s a line that lingers long after the credits roll—a testament to how the people we meet shape who we become. Have you let your friends know that they have “changed you”?

Ultimately, *Wicked* isn’t just about witches or magic. It’s about identity, compassion, and the courage to defy expectations. It shows us that sometimes, doing what’s right might make us look “wicked” or mean in the eyes of others, but authenticity usually wins in the end—even though you might have to explain yourself a few times or walk away and trust friends will return. Through stunning visuals and soulful performances, the film reminds us that everyone deserves to be seen for who they truly are. We are all different…it is what it is. I always say, “It takes all kinds to make the world go ’round.”

Don’t have three hours to rewatch *Wicked*? FIND THEM! Break it into halves (I’m also a Gone With the Wind fan—used to breaking movies into digestible pieces).  These unforgettable quotes are capturing hearts around the world. From Glinda’s introspection to Elphaba’s determination, every line tells a story of growth, friendship, and the power of believing in yourself. After all, as Elphaba herself proves—our futures, like hers, are truly UNLIMITED!

Did I mention the book – Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of the West (← link to buy on Amazon) – is fantastic, one of my favorites, and I’ve been fascinated with it since 2002? I devoured it late at night while up with baby G! Highly recommended, especially if you are one of those who can “see” the settings while reading! Some of you reading this might be thinking, “Doesn’t Mel have an issue with flying monkeys?” Well, it’s gotten a smidge better – ha! Part 2 will be an EYE-OPENING experience, because I won’t want to miss anything at all!

Tonight is NBC’s “Wicked: One Special Night” and I can’t wait. It’s been a LONG YEAR of waiting for Part 2! Just a reminder!
